The opening single Sheeran created for his third studio album was titled "Perfect."
Written about his future wife Cherry Seaborn, whom he knew from school and later reconnected with when she was working in New York, the song is a romantic ballad that emphasizes conventional marriage.
Sheeran explained that he got the idea for the song's lyrics while staying at James Blunt's house in Ibiza with the two other artists, where they had listened to Future's music at six in the morning. We were listening to our favorite song, Future's "March Madness," while barefoot on the grass. The studio was reserved for the day, and once I had that, I thought, "Right, let me just flesh that out." And the song sort of happened completed on the day. I recognized its uniqueness.
The song was self-produced by Sheeran with assistance from Will Hicks. His brother Matthew Sheeran orchestrated the strings for the recording. The brothers had never previously worked together on a song, but it was their grandmother's dying wish to witness them making music together.
